The Santiago Canyon College softball team hit the road Friday for a non-conference doubleheader against the College of the Canyons Cougars. The Hawks were bested in both contests, falling by final scores of 5–0 and 13–1 (5 inn.).
Santiago Canyon scratched across just one run over the 12 innings played, coming in the top of the fifth inning of the second game. Freshman second baseman Mikayla Martinez was the lone Hawk to touch home, scoring on a sacrifice flyout off the bat of freshman pitcher Brianna Longaker.
Martinez accounted for two of the Hawks' five hits in the loss, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and the team's lone run scored. Sophomore backstop Allie Kirkpatrick, freshman center fielder Emily Ceballos, and Longaker each added a hit.
In the opening game, freshman hurler Victoria Recendez (1–2) toed the slab and went the distance. She allowed five runs, four of them earned, while striking out four. Recendez retired the side in the fifth inning, highlighted by a swinging strikeout for the second out of the frame.
Offensively in the first game, freshman first baseman Maya Medina paced the Hawks by going 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
