Women’s Volleyball Opens Season Against Irvine Valley
The Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team opened its season Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Irvine Valley College Lasers in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play. Despite a short-handed roster featuring just six players — four of them returners — the Hawks battled hard in a three-set loss.
SCC pushed Irvine Valley in the first two sets, staying within two points before the Lasers were able to pull away late.
Sophomore Ashlyn Smith, a key offensive leader last season, paced the Hawks with seven kills on 28 swings. She also added one block and seven digs.
Freshman Amy Lewis directed the offense from the setter spot, tallying six assists while chipping in three kills and five digs. Sophomore Liean Navarro contributed two kills and three digs, while sophomore Jayden Sessom anchored the back row with six digs and a service ace.
Freshman Yulianna Ruiz provided energy from the service line with a team-high two aces, plus one kill and three digs. Freshman Sissi Pan notched a solo block, while Smith recorded another emphatic solo stuff in the second set.
