After a scoreless first half in the 3C2A Southern Regional playoff matchup between the No. 2 Santiago Canyon College Hawks and the No. 15 Bakersfield College Renegades, it didn't take long for the Hawks to break through in the second frame. Freshman Faith Ammann took a corner kick in the 53rd minute that bent toward the far-right post, struck it, and ricocheted into the net. That goal stood as the game winner, securing a 1–0 victory.
At first glance, it appeared that sophomore Clarissa Huerta may have headed the ball gently into the net, but it was ultimately Ammaan's perfectly placed corner that crossed the line.
The Hawks generated 11 scoring opportunities in the first half but couldn't capitalize. Their 12th attempt, and first shot of the second half, finally sealed the deal. Santiago Canyon finished with 21 total shots compared to Bakersfield's three.
The match was played largely on Bakersfield's half of the field. Sophomore and OEC Defensive Player of the Year Karen Pedraza anchored a defensive unit that allowed minimal offensive penetration. She was supported by sophomore Jordyn Gallegos and freshman Melanie Salazar.
Sophomore goalkeeper Makayla Worcester earned the win with a clean sheet, recording three saves.
Eight players registered two or more shots. Leading the way was sophomore Mia Lussier with four attempts, followed by three each from freshman Lauren Wood and Huerta.
The Hawks (15-2-5) advance to the third round of the Southern Regionals. They will host the winner of No. 10 MiraCosta vs. No. 7 Santa Barbara at home, pending weather and field conditions, on Tuesday, November 25 at 2 p.m. Stay tuned to www.scchawks.com for more information.
