Sophomore goalkeeper Mikayla Worcester made a stunning, leaping save in the first half of Wednesday's conference matchup against the Golden West College Rustlers, preserving a scoreless draw for the Hawks.
Despite firing 12 shots, five of which were on goal, the Hawks were unable to break through offensively. Still, Worcester's clutch stop kept the match level heading into the team's final conference game of the week on Friday.
Worcester was called on for just two saves, thanks to a strong defensive effort from sophomore Karen Pedraza, sophomore Jordyn Gallegos, freshman Melanie Salazar, and freshman Faith Ammann, who limited the Rustlers' scoring chances. The highlight came off a Golden West corner kick, when a Rustlers striker headed the ball toward the underside of the crossbar. Worcester's outstretched arm deflected the shot over the bar, keeping the Hawks in contention.
Seven different players registered at least one shot, with freshman Lauren Tindukasiri and Ammann leading the attack. Ammann placed two of her attempts on goal, while Tindukasiri added another shot on target.
With a record of 14-1-5 overall and 9-3-1 in conference play, the Hawks remain locked in a tie with Saddleback College atop the standings. The two sides will meet Friday at 3 p.m. on the Hawks' home field to decide the conference championship.
